Research Art Lab

Dusk to Dawn
An overnight workshop for artists on Orford Ness. Experience, and make art in response to, the shifting colours and light in the incredible coastal landscape of shingle, sea, river and sky.

Defining a Visual Practices Lab
This public workshop will explore the essential role of diverse visual practices in driving innovative art-science-society collaborations. Visual practices—formalized methods of representing and interpreting subjects—are employed across a wide range of disciplines, both within and outside academia. The workshop will feature visual artists who will present model projects they are developing in collaboration with environmental scientists, farmers, technologists, bioindustry experts, government officials, community representatives, activists, and fellow artists. Discussions will focus on the value of visual practices that embrace intuition, creativity, and the unknown to generate new insights and address complex environmental, technological, social, and political challenges.
Camera O
Experience the Orford Ness landscape in a new way by capturing the outside image inside the Bomb Ballistics Building through a camera obscura. A camera obscura was used on Orford Ness in the Bomb Ballistic Buildings in the 1930s to plot and gather data on bomb accuracy. We have installed this one in the same location but to more peaceful ends to observe and record the shifting light and forms of the contemporary coastal landscape looking south towards the Power House. The camera obscura is open 5-6 April and will accompany the new tondo (round) drawing exhibition Camera O which is on view until 26 October 2025.
